Print Care & Framing Guide

Your Pix-RSA artwork has been created to be enjoyed for years. Appropriate handling, placement and cleaning will help preserve its colour, surface and overall appearance.

General care

For both canvas and giclée prints:

  • Keep the artwork indoors unless it is specifically sold for outdoor use.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Keep the artwork away from heaters, fireplaces and strong air-conditioning vents.
  • Avoid damp walls and rooms with high humidity.
  • Do not display the artwork where it may be exposed to water, steam or cooking grease.
  • Handle the artwork with clean, dry hands.
  • Do not use household cleaning sprays or chemicals on the printed surface.

Caring for canvas prints

Pix-RSA canvas prints are supplied stretched and ready to hang unless otherwise stated.

Hanging your canvas

Use suitable wall fittings for the wall material and the weight of the artwork.

For larger canvas prints, use two secure hanging points where practical. This helps keep the artwork level and reduces movement.

Do not hang a canvas directly above a strong heat source or in a location where it receives direct sunlight for extended periods.

Cleaning your canvas

To remove light surface dust:

  • Use a clean, soft, dry microfibre cloth.
  • Wipe very gently without applying pressure.
  • A soft artist’s brush may also be used for corners and edges.

Do not use:

  • Water
  • Wet cloths
  • Alcohol
  • Glass cleaner
  • Furniture polish
  • Chemical sprays
  • Abrasive cloths

Do not press on the centre of the canvas, as this may stretch or damage the material.

Moving a canvas

Hold the artwork by its outer frame rather than pressing against the printed surface.

When transporting it, protect the corners and keep the artwork upright.

Caring for giclée fine-art prints

Pix-RSA giclée prints are supplied unframed and rolled in a protective tube unless otherwise stated.

Unpacking your print

Open the tube carefully and remove the print with clean, dry hands.

Avoid touching the printed image area. Hold the print by the edges or border.

Do not force the print flat, fold it or place heavy objects directly on the printed surface.

A professional framer can safely relax and mount a rolled print.

Framing recommendations

For the best presentation and protection, use a reputable professional framer.

Ask for:

  • Acid-free or conservation-grade mount board
  • Archival backing materials
  • UV-filtering glass or acrylic where appropriate
  • A spacer or mount that prevents the print from touching the glazing
  • Reversible mounting methods that do not permanently damage the print

The print should not be permanently glued to low-quality backing board.

Pix-RSA giclée prints may include a border to assist with mounting and framing.

Cleaning a framed print

Clean only the outside of the glass or acrylic.

Spray cleaner onto the cloth, not directly onto the frame. This helps prevent liquid from entering the frame.

Do not allow cleaner or moisture to reach the artwork.

Choosing a location

Good locations include:

  • Living rooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Offices
  • Reception areas
  • Guest rooms
  • Hallways away from direct sunlight

Avoid:

  • Bathrooms
  • Outdoor areas
  • Damp walls
  • Areas directly above kettles or stoves
  • Positions directly opposite strong sunlight
  • Areas close to open fires or heaters

Storage

If the artwork is not being displayed:

Canvas prints

Store upright in a clean, dry space. Protect the front, back and corners from dust and impact.

Giclée prints

Keep the print in its protective tube or place it flat between suitable archival materials.

Do not store artwork in garages, roof spaces, damp storerooms or areas exposed to major temperature changes.

Damage and professional assistance

Do not attempt to repair tears, dents, water damage, mould or major surface marks using household adhesives or cleaning products.

Contact a professional framer or art conservator for advice.
